Trump and Putin hold one-hour call to discuss Ukraine conflict

Following a shuttle diplomacy mission by US special envoy Witkoff and Jared Kushner to Moscow and Kyiv, US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin held a one-hour telephone call on September 8 to discuss the conflict in Ukraine. While both leaders reportedly characterized the conversation as constructive and expressed a desire to reach an agreement to end the fighting, significant obstacles remain.

Trump stated that Putin hopes to reach a deal and noted that both Russian and Ukrainian leaders appear “tired of fighting,” though he highlighted the mutual animosity between Putin and President Volodymyr Zelenskyy as a major hurdle. Despite the diplomatic efforts, fighting resumed in Kyiv on September 8 after a brief three-day pause in strikes against capital cities. Russia conducted large-scale attacks on Ukrainian infrastructure, including military logistics and drone production facilities.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov indicated that core issues preventing a resolution—specifically Ukraine’s NATO membership and the recognition of territorial realities on the battlefield—remain unresolved. While the US delegation reported “substantial progress” regarding future tripartite talks, analysts suggest that without breakthroughs on security guarantees and territorial sovereignty, a definitive ceasefire remains elusive.
