Trump and Xi discuss WWII ties and regional stability at Washington summit
During a recent summit in Washington, U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping discussed historical ties and regional stability. Trump referenced the WWII-era alliance and the Flying Tigers, while Xi noted the historical cooperation against Japanese militarism. Taiwan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs noted that while China emphasizes a shared history to address Japan, the U.S. maintains its position as a stabilizing force in East Asia.
The summit also touched upon Japan-China relations. Reports from Japanese media indicate that Trump praised Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi as a ‘strong leader’ during his discussions with Xi. Trump reportedly urged Xi to engage in direct dialogue with Takaichi, following criticisms of the Japanese government by the Chinese leader. This comes at a time when high-level communication between Tokyo and Beijing has been stagnant.
While the summit resulted in a consensus to build a ‘constructive strategic stable relationship’ based on respect and reciprocity, officials from Taiwan expressed concern regarding how China might use the perceived parity of the meeting to influence regional dynamics and its stance toward Taiwan.
