Xi Jinping and Donald Trump extend U.S.-China trade truce FAST-MOVING

Chinese President Xi Jinping conducted a three-day state visit to the United States, meeting with President Donald Trump at the White House. The summit was marked by high-level pageantry, including a rare personal greeting by Trump at Joint Base Andrews and a formal state dinner where Trump presented Xi with a bald eagle statue.

A key outcome of the meeting was the agreement to extend the existing trade truce between the U.S. and China until January 10, 2027. This extension provides additional time for negotiators to work toward a broader economic framework. U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent noted that while China is meeting its 25 million ton soybean purchase commitment, it remains behind on a $17 billion pledge for other agricultural products.

Discussions also covered sensitive geopolitical and technological issues, including artificial intelligence, semiconductor access, and the situation in the Taiwan Strait. Xi Jinping urged the U.S. to handle the Taiwan issue with caution and oppose independence movements. Meanwhile, the Taiwanese government accused Beijing of distorting the facts regarding the meeting's outcomes. Other topics of discussion included Iran and global strategic stability.
