Trump Announces $22 B Modernization of Washington Dulles Airport

President Donald Trump announced a $22‑billion comprehensive modernization of Washington Dulles International Airport, one of the largest single‑airport infrastructure investments in U.S. history. The plan calls for demolishing the existing C and D terminals and constructing new facilities covering roughly 465,000 m², adding new gates, expanded parking for 32,000 vehicles, upgraded baggage handling and a modern underground rail system to replace the aging mobile‑lounge people‑mover.

Funding will come from long‑term bonds issued by the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority, airline contributions, and public‑private partnerships, avoiding direct federal taxpayer money. United Airlines, the airport’s biggest user, will co‑finance the project; its CEO Scott Kirby attended the announcement and the airline’s main terminal will undergo a full renovation. Construction could begin in spring 2027 and is expected to span about a decade, aiming to make Dulles one of the world’s most modern hubs.
