Trump announces 50% tariffs on $20 billion of Canadian goods

President Donald Trump has announced sweeping 50% tariffs on approximately $20 billion worth of Canadian goods, including electrical equipment and machinery. The levies, which are scheduled to take effect in 30 days, were enacted under Section 338 of the Tariff Act of 1930. While certain imports such as energy products, critical minerals, and fish are excluded, the tariffs will not include carve-outs for goods covered under the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA).

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney stated that Canada believes in free and fair trade and will take measures to support its domestic workers and businesses. Meanwhile, Ontario Premier Doug Ford has called for retaliatory measures, suggesting Canada respond "tariff for tariff, dollar for dollar."

The Canadian Trucking Alliance warned that the move could disrupt integrated supply chains, increase freight costs, and create border bottlenecks. Economic analysts note that such tariffs can contribute to inflation by raising the cost of imported goods and may impact investor portfolios by increasing costs for companies dependent on foreign products.
