Trump's 50% Tariff Targets Canada's Dairy Supply Management

U.S. President Donald Trump announced a 50% tariff on roughly $20 billion of Canadian imports, focusing on dairy, eggs and poultry. He argued that Canada's supply‑management system—production quotas, set pricing and import limits—is "unreasonable" for American farmers and constitutes discrimination.

Canadian officials rejected the move. Quebec Premier Christine Fréchette called the system non‑negotiable, and Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc said it is a cornerstone of Canada’s economy and rural communities. The tariffs are set to take effect in August and could raise costs for U.S. consumers and disrupt supply chains across North America, while Canadian producers warn of protests and political backlash.

The measure is presented as a response to perceived U.S. market disadvantages and aims to boost domestic production, but it also risks escalating trade tensions between the United States and Canada.
