Medicare beneficiaries to receive $90 one-time payments in October

The Trump administration has announced that more than 20 million Medicare Part B enrollees will receive a one-time $90 payment in October 2026 to help offset premium costs. The initiative is funded by the Medicare Improvement Fund, a $2 billion pool established by Congress in 2008 that the administration claims has never been used to directly lower costs for seniors.

Most eligible recipients will receive the payment automatically via direct deposit around October 8, while those without direct deposit will receive a paper check from the U.S. Treasury later in the month. Eligibility is limited to those in Original Medicare Part B living in the U.S.; individuals enrolled in Medicare Advantage or those receiving Medicaid assistance for their premiums are excluded.

The announcement comes shortly before the November midterm elections. In a related campaign promise, Donald Trump has also proposed a “Trump Dividend,” which would provide $5,000 checks to every adult U.S. citizen if Republicans retain control of both the House and the Senate. Unlike the Medicare payments, the $5,000 proposal would require congressional approval and is estimated to cost approximately $1.2 trillion.
