Trump announces automatic enrollment of 70 million children in investment accounts

President Donald Trump announced the automatic enrollment of approximately 70 million children under the age of 18 into ‘Trump Accounts,’ a federal investment program designed to foster long-term wealth through tax-advantaged, IRA-style accounts. The initiative, which transitioned from an opt-in to an automatic enrollment model on October 1, aims to increase participation among American families.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent noted that the program intends to provide a $1,000 federal seed contribution to eligible U.S. citizens born between January 1, 2025, and December 31, 2028. However, officials emphasized that automatic enrollment does not grant immediate access to funds; parents or legal guardians must claim the accounts through an official mobile app to manage them and unlock federal or philanthropic contributions.

Since the program's launch on July 4, 2026, over $4.5 billion has been deposited into these accounts. The program has received support from various entities, including the Dell family and approximately 70 companies. Additionally, Trump has defended related economic policies, including the use of tariffs and promised $5,000 payments to adults, provided Republicans maintain control of Congress.
