Trump Announces Renovation of Washington’s East Potomac Golf Course amid Legal and Environmental Controversy

President Donald Trump announced on Truth Social that the East Potomac Golf Links in Washington, D.C. will be rebuilt as a public, world‑class tournament venue beginning in September. He said the course will remain open to the public and could host events such as the U.S. Open, Ryder Cup or PGA Championship, while also touting reduced crime rates and restored monuments.

The plan faces opposition from historic‑preservation groups and environmental watchdogs. Soil from the demolition of the White House’s East Wing—tested positive for lead, chromium, pesticides and oil residues—was deposited on the golf course. The DC Preservation League has sued, with a federal judge set to rule in July and a possible appeal to the Supreme Court. Related Trump projects, including a new ball hall and a contested pool near the Lincoln Memorial, are also under legal scrutiny.
