Trump nominates Jay Clayton as DNI and names Bill Pulte acting director

President Donald Trump announced two separate moves for the leadership of the United States intelligence community. He nominated former SEC chairman and U.S. Attorney Jay Clayton to become the Director of National Intelligence (DNI), a position that requires Senate confirmation. Clayton’s appointment follows the recent resignation of former DNI Tulsi Gabbard.

Earlier, Trump appointed Bill Pulte, the director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency, as acting DNI. Pulte’s lack of national‑security experience raised concerns on Capitol Hill, especially as lawmakers were finalising a three‑year renewal of Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, a key surveillance authority. Democrats signaled they would oppose extending the program while Pulte serves in the role.

Both appointments are being scrutinised for their potential impact on U.S. intelligence oversight and the upcoming renewal of a major spy tool.
