Trump claims credit for major drop in prescription drug prices

The White House has been promoting a Washington Post report regarding the sharpest year-over-year drop in prescription drug prices in over 60 years, attributing the decline to President Donald Trump. During a staged photo opportunity, Trump displayed printed copies of the headline to journalists, claiming credit for the economic shift.

However, the Washington Post report notes that experts attribute the price drop to Biden-era policies, specifically the Inflation Reduction Act signed in 2022. This legislation allows Medicare to negotiate prices for certain high-expenditure, single-source drugs. The first 10 negotiated prices are expected to take effect in 2026, potentially saving Medicare beneficiaries an estimated $1.5 billion in annual out-of-pocket costs.
