Trump claims Mexican cartels govern the country and says Sheinbaum is fearful

U.S. President Donald Trump repeated his allegation that drug‑cartel groups control Mexico, describing the nation as having “lost control” and calling President Claudia Sheinbaum “a very good woman but a very scared woman.” Trump made the comments at a G7 gathering in Evian, France, and said U.S. actions had cut drug‑trafficking flows by about 60 percent, while pledging new focus on land‑based corridors across the Mexican border.

The remarks heighten already rising diplomatic tension between Washington and Mexico. The Mexican government has previously rejected any notion of U.S. military intervention, emphasizing its own security strategy and bilateral cooperation based on respect for sovereignty. Trump’s statements also reference recent U.S. measures designating Mexican cartels as terrorist organizations and travel advisories linked to the 2026 World Cup, further straining the bilateral relationship.
