Trump considers military bases in Venezuela amid regional influence push
President Donald Trump has indicated the possibility of establishing U.S. military bases in Venezuela or elsewhere in South America as part of a broader effort to increase American influence in the Western Hemisphere. Following the arrest of former Venezuelan dictator Nicolás Maduro, the U.S. is seeking to strengthen relations and secure access to Venezuelan oil to fill national strategic reserves.
Simultaneously, the Trump administration faces criticism regarding its involvement in Brazil. U.S. officials have been accused by Democrats and Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva of engaging in a campaign of interference and destabilization ahead of Brazil’s presidential election. Critics point to threats of military action and economic measures, such as tariffs, as attempts to influence the political landscape in the region.
