Donald Trump hosts mining CEOs to boost US critical mineral supply
U.S. President Donald Trump will convene executives from the world’s largest mining companies, including Rio Tinto, BHP, Freeport‑McMoRan, MP Materials, Energy Fuels and The Metals Company, at the State Department on August 7. The roundtable is intended to secure domestic and allied supplies of critical minerals needed for defense systems, reduce reliance on China, and replenish stockpiles depleted during the Iran conflict.
At the same time, the U.S. Export‑Import Bank is providing $58 million in loans to three critical‑mineral projects: a $25 million loan to Westwater Resources for an Alabama natural‑graphite mine and processing plant; a $25 million loan to Global Advanced Metals to expand tantalum and niobium processing; and an $8 million loan to 5E Advanced Materials to boost boron production in California. The financing aligns with the administration’s broader $12 billion strategic minerals stockpile and its push to create jobs and address a shortage of engineers, geologists and miners.
Australian mining giants BHP and Rio Tinto are also invited, reflecting the United States’ partnership with Australia in building a more resilient critical‑mineral supply chain.
