Trump cuts to Medicaid, Medicare and SNAP deepen U.S. aid crisis

The Trump administration and Republican lawmakers have enacted major reductions to key social safety‑net programs. Federal legislation slashes Medicaid funding by nearly $1 trillion, the largest cut in the program’s history, and ends Medicare Part D drug‑price subsidies, raising prescription costs for millions of seniors. At the same time, new work‑and‑paperwork requirements tied to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) have reduced food‑aid enrollment. In Wisconsin, state data show a drop of 24,000 to 33,000 recipients between July and April, while nationwide SNAP participation has fallen by about 4.5 million since last July.

Critics argue the combined effect of these policies pushes vulnerable families into deeper financial strain, with higher insurance premiums, reduced access to medication, and increased food insecurity across the United States.
