Trump defends trade war with Canada amid tariff escalations

President Donald Trump has defended his escalating trade dispute with Canada, dismissing concerns that the conflict will negatively impact affordability for American consumers. The dispute follows Trump’s announcement of new tariffs on Canadian automobiles.

In response to the U.S. measures, Canada has retaliated by imposing tariffs on more than 700 American goods and doubling duties on U.S. steel and aluminum to match U.S. rates.

Addressing the economic implications, Trump stated that the current trade relationship results in an average loss of $62 billion a year for the United States. He argued that his actions are necessary to stop these losses, asserting, “Ultimately, it’s going to be very good for us because we’re losing.”
