Trump economic management faces Republican criticism amid rising costs

Donald Trump's economic management is facing increasing scrutiny and criticism from within the Republican Party as the November midterm elections approach. According to an Economist/YouGov poll, approval of his economic handling has dropped from 68% to 48% since the start of his second term.

US government data indicates that consumer prices have risen by an average of 5% since January 2025, with a notable acceleration in price increases due to rising energy costs starting in March 2026. Economic pressures are being compounded by tariffs, attempts to import cheaper meat, and the ongoing war in Iran.

A Reuters/Ipsos poll from August 3 reveals a significant shift in public perception: for the first time in nearly a decade, Americans consider Democrats to be better economic managers than Republicans. This reversal marks a departure from the period between 2017 and early in Trump's second term, when Republicans held a consistent advantage on this issue.
