Trump election executive order faces legal challenges

A legal battle is unfolding over an executive order by President Donald Trump that seeks to nationalize U.S. elections by involving the U.S. Postal Service and Homeland Security. While the Supreme Court recently ruled that the order could proceed for the time being without addressing its underlying merits, a Massachusetts judge has issued a 14-day restraining order to prevent it from taking effect.

The legal uncertainty has placed states in a difficult position regarding their mail-ballot processes ahead of the 2026 midterm elections. U.S. District Court Judge Indira Talwani described the regulation as “a likely unconstitutional regulation for which compliance is practically impossible” regarding the upcoming midterms.
