Trump energy policies could cost US $700 billion in clean energy investment

A report by the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) indicates that the energy policies of the Trump administration could result in a loss of up to $700 billion in clean energy investments over the next decade.

The analysis suggests that the removal of tax credits via the ‘One Big Beautiful Bill Act’ in July 2025, alongside a focus on fossil fuels, may prevent the installation of 390 to 540 gigawatts of planned renewable capacity and energy storage by 2035. The report notes that these policies could lead to a doubling of the power sector’s carbon footprint, with annual dioxide emissions potentially exceeding 1 billion metric tons.

Economically, the shift is projected to increase electricity spending for US consumers by up to $30 billion annually by 2035, with some households facing utility bill increases of as much as 25%. The administration has also reportedly pressured utilities to extend the operation of older fossil fuel plants and has implemented tariffs that have impacted the cost of electricity generation technologies.
