Trump Evangelicals Split Over Iran War and Immigration Policy

A Reuters/Ipsos poll of 4,531 U.S. adults conducted June 3‑8 found that roughly half of evangelical Christians – a core constituency of former President Donald Trump – say his administration’s approach to the war against Iran and to immigration enforcement does not reflect their understanding of Christianity.

Fifty‑four percent said the use of U.S. forces in Iran was inconsistent with Christian values, while 41 % disagreed. Fifty‑one percent said immigration policies were not aligned with Christian principles, versus 44 % who thought they were. Evangelical approval of Trump fell to 52 % from 61 % in August, still well above his 35 % overall approval rating. The poll notes evangelicals helped deliver the Republican win in the 2024 election and will be pivotal in the November midterms, as the Iran conflict has raised fuel prices and intensified debate over the party’s religious rhetoric.
