Trump expresses support for Flock law enforcement cameras

President Trump has expressed support for Flock cameras, citing their utility for law enforcement. Speaking aboard Air Force One, he stated, “I sort of like ’em because of that, because of law enforcement,” while acknowledging that some view the technology as an infringement on privacy.

Flock cameras are automated license plate readers used in approximately 6,000 communities across nearly every U.S. state. The systems capture images of passing vehicles and convert them into searchable data, including license plate numbers, timestamps, and vehicle characteristics. While police agencies utilize the data to investigate crimes such as vehicle theft and missing persons, critics argue the network allows for the tracking of individuals' movements without specific suspicion.

The technology has become a point of political contention, with candidates in states including Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Florida calling for restrictions or bans. While Trump’s comments clarify his personal stance, he has not yet announced a formal federal policy regarding data retention, warrants, or government funding for these systems.
