Turkey hosts NATO summit in Ankara, leaders discuss security and defense

The 36th NATO State and Government Leaders Summit was held in Ankara, Turkey, with 32 heads of state, over 100 ministers and more than 2,500 journalists in attendance. President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan highlighted the summit’s focus on strengthening NATO’s European pillar, advancing defense cooperation and showcasing Turkey’s role in regional security.

Security and logistical arrangements included extensive police, transport and public‑order measures, and 145 flights operated through Ankara’s airports. Interior Minister Süleyman Soylu and Minister of Transport Uraloğlu confirmed that the necessary precautions were taken without excess.

Diplomatic traffic was intense: President Erdoğan met leaders from the United States, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, France, Italy, Germany, Greece, and others, discussing issues such as the Ukraine war, Gaza cease‑fire, Iran‑U.S. tensions and migration. Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis raised concerns over Turkey’s F‑35 procurement, while Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte said NATO emerged united after a dispute with U.S. President Donald Trump, who also made remarks about Iran during the summit.

The summit concluded with a joint declaration on “NATO 3.0,” calling for increased European defence spending and deeper alliance integration. Foreign press reported satisfaction with the event’s organization and outcomes.
