Trump hosts AI leaders at White House to sign safety agreement

President Donald Trump hosted a high-profile luncheon at the White House for global artificial intelligence leaders to discuss frontier model safety and regulation. During the meeting, representatives from major tech firms including Google, Meta, OpenAI, Anthropic, xAI, and Nvidia signed a one-page self-regulatory agreement titled the ‘Joint Commitment on Frontier Responsibilities’. This agreement outlines a four-layer safety framework involving internal monitoring, dedicated safety teams, independent external audits, and board-level oversight.

Trump’s published seating chart highlighted the perceived power structure within the industry. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang and Elon Musk, founder of xAI and Tesla, occupied the central positions directly to the President’s right and left, respectively. Other prominent figures seated near the President included Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg and Google CEO Sundar Pichai. In contrast, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, who has advocated for slowing AI development to ensure safety, was seated near the end of the table.

Trump also signaled a shift in terminology, referring to AI as ‘Super Intelligence’ and expressing a preference for the term over ‘artificial,’ which he suggested can sound ‘fake.’ The gathering included high-ranking administration officials such as Vice President JD Vance and various cabinet members, underscoring the integration of AI strategy into national policy.
