Trump immigration enforcement expansion drives rise in federal detention

A task force launched by President Donald Trump and Tennessee Governor Bill Lee in Memphis has shifted from anti‑crime rhetoric to intensive immigration enforcement, leading to a surge in ICE arrests of people without criminal convictions. Community groups report that immigrant neighborhoods are immobilised, hotlines are flooded with calls, and routine traffic stops have resulted in deportation‑related detentions.

A briefing from the Prison Policy Initiative shows that federal confinement nationwide has risen 12% over the past two years, with a 631% increase since 2024. The report estimates 268,000 people are currently detained or incarcerated and another 321,000 face supervision, totaling more than half a million under federal correctional control across multiple agencies.
