South Korea to invest up to $200 billion in U.S. energy projects

U.S. President Donald Trump has announced a major energy investment package from South Korea, totaling up to $200 billion in strategic energy projects. This follows a broader $350 billion trade agreement reached in July 2025, which included reducing tariffs on South Korean goods from 25% to 15%.

The announced energy projects include a $22.3 billion natural gas-fired power plant in Encinal, Texas, designed to supply approximately 6GW of electricity to AI data centers. Additionally, the plan involves the construction of eight large-scale nuclear power plants across the United States and a significant investment of approximately $54 billion in the Alaska LNG project, which includes a 1,300-kilometer pipeline to transport gas from the North Slope to southern export terminals.

However, a discrepancy exists between the U.S. and South Korean government positions. While President Trump presented these as confirmed major projects, the South Korean government has clarified that only the Texas gas plant is officially confirmed as the first project. The Alaska LNG and nuclear power plant initiatives are currently classified as subjects for further discussion, pending confirmation of their commercial viability and compliance with South Korean legal procedures. The South Korean government emphasized that total strategic investments will not exceed the $200 billion cap.
