Trump nominates Matthew Jones for FHA and Brian Johnson for CFPB

President Donald Trump has nominated Matthew Jones to serve as the assistant secretary for housing at the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), a role that includes serving as the commissioner of the Federal Housing Administration (FHA). Jones, who currently serves as HUD’s deputy assistant secretary for single-family housing, oversees an FHA portfolio of more than eight million loans with an unpaid principal balance exceeding $1.6 trillion. His nomination has received endorsements from the Mortgage Bankers Association and the National Council of State Housing Agencies.

Separately, the Senate Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs has advanced the nomination of Brian Johnson to lead the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB). The committee voted 13-11 to move the nomination forward. Johnson, a former CFPB deputy director currently with Capital One, faces opposition from Senator Elizabeth Warren, who raised concerns regarding potential conflicts of interest due to his ties to the banking industry. Unlike some previous acting leadership, Johnson has stated he opposes dismantling the CFPB.
