Trump orders shift to steam systems for new US aircraft carrier
In the United States, President Donald Trump has signed a national security memorandum ordering a shift in the construction of future naval vessels. The directive mandates a plan to replace electromagnetic launch systems (EMALS) and advanced ammunition elevators on the upcoming aircraft carrier CVN-81, the Doris Miller, with traditional steam and hydraulic-based systems.
The White House cited budget overruns, delays, and excessive complexity as reasons for the change. President Trump previously criticized the EMALS technology, describing it as expensive and inefficient compared to traditional methods. The Secretary of War is expected to submit a detailed implementation plan within 60 days. This decision specifically targets the CVN-81 and does not currently mandate changes for the first three ships in the Gerald Ford class.
In Israel, Defense Minister Israel Katz has directed the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) to prepare a plan to transfer all civil law enforcement responsibilities in the West Bank to the Israel Police. This move aims to strengthen sovereignty and allow the IDF to focus exclusively on counter-terrorism and border defense. The transition will involve establishing a dedicated police force with the necessary budgets and authorities to manage civilian matters in the region.
