Donald Trump seeks meeting with Kim Jong Un later this year

US President Donald Trump has expressed his desire to meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un later this year, potentially during the APEC summit in Shenzhen. Trump noted that he and Kim maintain a good personal relationship.

In a move perceived as a gesture toward Pyongyang, Trump recently reduced the scale of joint US-South Korea military exercises, describing them as 'unfriendly' to North Korea. However, North Korean officials have remained cautious. Kim Yo Jong has characterized the military exercises as aggressive and stated that US policy remains hostile, while also denying that Trump and Kim are currently in contact.

Amidst these diplomatic efforts, North Korea launched approximately ten ballistic missiles from its eastern coast, an action analysts view as a protest against regional military activities. The US State Department has maintained that Washington is open to dialogue without preconditions, though experts warn that North Korea may demand significant policy changes and concessions regarding its nuclear status.
