Trump proposes community dividends and self-generation for AI data centers

President Donald Trump has proposed that large-scale artificial intelligence data centers should generate their own electricity and sell or provide any surplus to local communities or the electrical grid. This measure aims to prevent rising electricity costs for residents and mitigate local opposition to these facilities.

Trump also suggested that companies should pay a financial ‘dividend’ to the communities or individuals hosting these centers to gain public support. He noted that projects previously facing resistance often gained acceptance after reaching financial agreements with local residents. During a rally in South Carolina, he specifically suggested direct payments to residents ranging from $10,000 to $15,000.

The proposal comes amid growing public concern regarding the massive water and energy consumption required by AI infrastructure. An AP-NORC poll indicates that 53% of Americans are very or extremely concerned about the environmental consequences of AI. In the United States, data center electricity demand is projected to rise from approximately 30 GW in 2025 to over 90 GW by 2030.
