Trump-Putin Anchorage summit anniversary marks diplomatic decline

One year after the historic summit at the Elmendorf-Richardson air base in Anchorage, Alaska, the diplomatic optimism shared by Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin has largely dissipated. At the time, Trump described the meeting as “an encounter of ten,” suggesting that a subsequent summit including Volodymyr Zelensky would be decisive.

While the Kremlin initially viewed the meeting as a “starting point” for pragmatic relations and a way for Russia to return to the international stage, the relationship between Washington and Moscow has since deteriorated. The initial optimism has been replaced by open diplomatic conflict and skepticism.

The United States has responded to irreconcilable positions by imposing new sanctions on Moscow and failing to renew the New START nuclear arms limitation treaty. Conversely, Russian officials, including Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, have questioned Washington's good faith, suggesting the Alaska summit may have been used to gain time to strengthen Ukraine militarily.
