Trump reduces South Korea military drills to ease North Korea tensions

U.S. President Donald Trump ordered a substantial reduction of the annual Ulchi Freedom Shield military exercise, which took place between August 17 and August 21, 2026. Trump described the joint U.S.-South Korean maneuvers as “inappropriate and hostile” and “insulting” toward North Korean leader Kim Jong-un. The reduction aims to ease tensions and create conditions for renewed diplomatic dialogue with Pyongyang, following Trump's expressed desire to maintain a “good relationship” with Kim.

Despite the scaled-back bilateral exercise, South Korea confirmed on September 1 that it will proceed with the trilateral Freedom Edge exercise from September 7 to 11, 2026. This exercise will involve the military forces of South Korea, the United States, and Japan near Jeju Island. According to Captain Jang Do-young of the South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff, the maneuvers will include air defense, anti-submarine warfare, cyber defense, and ballistic missile preparedness to counter regional nuclear and missile threats.
