Trump orders reduction in US-South Korea military exercises

Donald Trump has ordered a substantial reduction in the annual Ulchi Freedom Shield (UFS) joint military exercises between the United States and South Korea. The exercise, originally scheduled to last 11 days, was cut to five days and limited to defensive operations, omitting the planned counter-attack phase. Trump stated the exercises send a ‘hostile’ signal to North Korea and expressed a desire to pursue direct diplomacy with Kim Jong Un.

South Korean President Lee Jae-myung acknowledged the move as an effort to facilitate dialogue, but the decision has caused friction within the alliance. US Senators have urged Trump to reverse the decision, citing concerns over weakened deterrence. North Korea responded to the reduction by launching approximately a dozen short-range ballistic missiles. Kim Yo Jong mocked the South Korean military, labeling it a ‘puppet army’ under US control.

While the US State Department expressed readiness for unconditional dialogue, it maintained its goal of complete denuclearization. Meanwhile, China has urged the US to abandon its hostile policies toward North Korea to ensure regional stability.
