Trump rejects extension of Iran framework agreement
President Donald Trump has declined to extend the 60-day framework agreement established in June to resolve the conflict with Iran and its nuclear program. The Memorandum of Understanding, brokered by Pakistan, was intended to provide a window for negotiations toward a permanent resolution, but the deadline has passed without a comprehensive settlement.
Trump stated that while Iranian officials appear interested in an accord, they have not accepted the conditions he deems essential. He emphasized that preventing Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon remains the primary American objective and signaled there will be no compromise on that front.
The expiration of the deal comes amid tensions regarding the Strait of Hormuz. While the interim agreement called for the reopening of the waterway, disputes remain over control and traffic facilitation. Trump asserted that the United States now exercises “total control” over the strategic strait due to an existing blockade, countering Iranian claims to the waterway.
