Trump rejects joint AI development with China to protect US secrets

President Donald Trump has rejected proposals for joint artificial intelligence development ventures with China, citing concerns that such cooperation would compromise American technological secrets. Speaking in Washington, Trump emphasized that the United States currently holds a significant lead in AI and expressed a desire to maintain that advantage over its primary economic rival.

These remarks follow a recent visit by Chinese President Xi Jinping to the White House, during which the two nations announced a new dialogue on AI and established a communications channel to prevent misunderstandings during AI-related incidents. While discussions regarding AI were held during the meeting between Trump and Xi, the President insisted against joint development, stating that cooperation would allow China to gain immediate access to American knowledge.

In addition to his stance on international cooperation, Trump expressed opposition to strict AI regulations, arguing that such measures could hinder future growth. During a meeting with technology executives from companies including OpenAI, Anthropic, and Meta, he noted a belief among leaders that there should be “tremendous self-regulation” within the industry.
