Trump shifts focus to economic pressure on Iran
President Donald Trump has indicated a strategic shift toward economic pressure rather than immediate military confrontation with Iran. Describing the current U.S. posture as “low-keying it,” Trump stated that the administration is monitoring Iran’s severe financial instability, characterized by high inflation and a lack of funds to pay its military forces.
The President attributed much of Iran’s economic distress to the U.S. naval blockade in the Strait of Hormuz. This approach follows recent escalations where military action was frequently discussed. Simultaneously, the U.S. Treasury Department’s “Economic Fury” initiative continues to target Iran’s oil exports, cryptocurrency assets, and shadow banking channels, reportedly blocking access to tens of billions of dollars.
Within Iran, the economic crisis has led to significant domestic hardship. Reports indicate rising inflation and shrinking purchasing power, with instances of food theft in supermarkets. Meanwhile, Iran and Oman are reportedly nearing a technical agreement regarding shipping lanes in the Strait of Hormuz, though Tehran maintains that full passage depends on U.S. concessions and the removal of naval blockades.
