Trump signs executive orders expanding hunting and fishing access

President Trump signed two executive orders aimed at expanding public access to federal lands and waters for hunting and fishing. The orders, titled ‘Restoring American Salt Water and Angling Recreation’ and ‘Reinvigorating America’s Hunting Heritage’, seek to reverse previous regulatory restrictions and promote outdoor recreation.

One order directs federal agencies to implement a ‘presumption of accessibility’ for public lands and waters. This includes modernizing data collection for recreational fishing and repurposing decommissioned offshore structures, such as oil and gas platforms, into artificial reefs. The orders also mandate a review of access regulations to encourage voluntary access easements and land exchanges.

A key component of the action is the rescinding of Biden-era regulations that prohibited the use of lead ammunition and fishing tackle in several National Wildlife Refuges across states including Maryland, Virginia, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, and Maine. While the Fish and Wildlife Service previously cited health risks to wildlife and humans, industry representatives have characterized the ban as a political move rather than a scientific one.

While the National Shooting Sports Foundation hailed the move as a victory for outdoor traditions, animal welfare groups expressed concern. Humane World for Animals stated the orders raise questions regarding whether wildlife management will continue to prioritize science-based conservation and habitat health.
