Trump signs memo to boost U.S. commercial space launches

President Donald Trump has signed a new national space transportation policy memo aimed at drastically expanding the U.S. commercial space industry. The administration has set an ambitious goal to enable at least 1,000 space launches and re-entries annually by 2030, a significant increase from the 178 launches recorded in 2025.

To achieve this, the policy directs government agencies to incentivize the co-development of space infrastructure with private sector partners, expedite environmental and permitting reviews, and ensure sufficient wireless spectrum for operations. The memo also instructs agencies to avoid conducting government space activities that compete with or discourage commercial providers, unless necessary for national or public safety.

Key objectives include returning U.S. astronauts to the moon by 2028 and establishing initial moon base elements by 2030. NASA is specifically directed to facilitate commercial transportation to the moon and robotic access to Mars. Additionally, the administration has ordered the identification of a new federal re-entry site within 90 days and tasked agencies with finding federal land to support new launch and landing sites.
