Trump SNAP Overhaul Cuts Benefits for Millions

An estimated 4 million Americans have lost Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits after the Trump administration enacted new work‑requirement rules and a funding model change under the tax law passed in July. The law adds an 80‑hour monthly work threshold for adults with a child over 14, former foster children, veterans and people aged 55‑64, making it difficult for many part‑time workers to qualify.

The federal government now requires states to provide additional millions of dollars to keep SNAP operating; states that cannot meet the funding demand risk losing the program entirely. Starsky Wilson, president of the Children’s Defense Fund, warned that the rapid loss of benefits could deepen desperation among children and families, especially as wage growth lags inflation and other economic pressures mount.

The changes come amid broader economic strain, including high gas prices and a war with Iran that has affected the U.S. economy.
