Trump tariffs spur price hikes as Fed warns inflation may linger

President Donald Trump has publicly urged U.S. companies, including gasoline retailers and Walmart, to cut prices despite his administration’s tariff regime that analysts say has pushed household costs higher. On June 30 he called on gas stations to lower pump prices to about $2.50 per gallon, citing oil at $68 per barrel, and praised Walmart for announced cuts on items such as ground beef.

A New York Federal Reserve survey shows that many Mid‑Atlantic firms have not yet passed on the full cost of the tariffs and plan additional price increases, with roughly half expecting to raise prices in the coming months. Fed President John Williams said the peak effect of tariff‑driven inflation may be near, but lingering pressures—exacerbated by the renewed Middle‑East conflict—could keep inflation above target and shape future rate decisions.
