Donald Trump warns Europe of 100% tariffs over digital services taxes

President Donald Trump posted on Truth Social that any country imposing a digital services tax on U.S. tech firms will face an immediate 100% tariff on all goods shipped to the United States. The statement follows a February Supreme Court decision that curtailed his authority to impose broad tariffs, prompting the administration to rely on Section 301 investigations and targeted measures.

The threat came a day after the European Union approved legislation under its trade deal with Washington, which limits most U.S. tariffs on European products to 15% but does not address digital taxes. Countries such as France, the United Kingdom, Italy and Spain already levy digital services taxes on large online platforms. The EU Commission condemned the U.S. threat as “unjustified” and warned of a swift response.

Trump has previously warned of heavy tariffs on European wine and other products, and his latest warning expands the scope to all imports if digital taxes are maintained. The dispute underscores ongoing tensions over the Digital Markets Act, the Digital Services Act, and broader concerns about the treatment of American big‑tech companies abroad.
