Trump threatens 100% US tariffs on French wine over digital tax

U.S. President Donald Trump warned that Washington would impose 100% tariffs on French wine and champagne if France does not repeal its digital services tax on large American technology companies. He made the statement in an interview with the New York Post and urged French President Emmanuel Macron to scrap the levy, saying the only requirement was the tax’s removal.

The French digital tax, a 3% charge on revenues from digital services exceeding €25 million domestically or €750 million worldwide, targets major U.S. tech firms. French wine and champagne represent a key export to the United States, valued at about €9 billion in 2024. Neither the White House nor the French presidency has commented on the threat, but the exchange adds to already strained U.S.–France trade relations.
