Trump threatens EU with tariffs over Canada's proposed EU membership

President Donald Trump has threatened to impose heavy tariffs on the European Union or halt trade with the bloc entirely if the EU proceeds with plans to grant Canada associate membership. Trump characterized Canada as a ‘terrible trade partner’ and stated that any move toward EU integration could be viewed as a ‘hostile act’ depending on its intention.

The threat follows an announcement by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen to elevate the EU-Canada relationship through a proposed associate membership. This new category would involve cooperation in manufacturing, defense-industrial integration, technology, energy, AI, and Arctic collaboration. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has expressed interest in a unique security and economic alliance with Europe.

This escalation occurs amid existing trade tensions between the US and Canada. Trump has previously imposed 50% tariffs on Canadian goods, and plans are in place to restrict imports of Canadian dairy, alcohol, and automobiles. Analysts suggest Canada is actively seeking to diversify its economic and security dependencies to reduce vulnerability to US pressure.
