Donald Trump threatens new tariffs on Mexico's lettuce and Canada over wildfire smoke

U.S. President Donald Trump said he is considering a "large tariff" on Mexican lettuce after a Cyclospora outbreak in the United States caused severe diarrhoea, which officials have linked to iceberg lettuce grown in Guanajuato and distributed by Taylor Farms. The outbreak has spread to nine states with over 11,500 possible cases. Mexican health authorities reported that tests of lettuce and water from the Taylor Farms plant were negative for the parasite and that a positive FDA result was later identified as a false positive.

Trump also warned that Canada could face additional duties because smoke from large Canadian wildfires has degraded air quality across large parts of the United States. He said the United States may "bill Canada for the smoke" and suggested that the issue is being raised as the US‑Mexico‑Canada trade pact (USMCA) undergoes its first review. In a press briefing, he joked, "What would you prefer, the lettuce or the smoke? I think I prefer the smoke."
