Trump threatens to rename Lake Ontario amid trade tensions and Middle East maritime shifts

Tensions are escalating in North America as US President Donald Trump has threatened to rename Lake Ontario to ‘Lake America’ amid an intensifying trade war with Canada. This follows a previous renaming of the Gulf of Mexico to the ‘Gulf of America’. In response to US tariffs, Canada has announced it will impose duties ranging from 15% to 50% on various American products starting September 8. Canadian Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne described the situation as an ‘unprecedented challenge’ and noted that the government is releasing 7.5 billion Canadian dollars to support sectors affected by the trade conflict.

In the Middle East, Iran and Oman are negotiating a preliminary agreement to manage maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz. Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Garibabanpati stated that under this deal, military vessels would be prohibited from transiting the vital waterway. While commercial shipping would pass through Iranian waters, exits would be shared between Iranian and Omani waters. The US government has expressed opposition to parts of this agreement, specifically the joint management of the exit route. President Trump has reportedly threatened military action against Oman if it becomes an obstacle to US interests, as Washington remains dissatisfied with Oman’s stance in negotiations with Iran.
