Trump to discuss detained US citizens with Xi Jinping

As US President Donald Trump prepares to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping, discussions are expected to include the release of two American citizens currently detained in China. Trump is anticipated to press for the freedom of Youlin Chen, a specialist in North Korean nuclear programs, and academic Min Zin.

While the release of these specific citizens is a priority, it remains uncertain if the summit will address broader human rights concerns regarding Tibet or the Uyghur minority. This follows a pattern where the Trump administration has often avoided extensive human rights dialogues in its relations with various international leaders.

Simultaneously, approximately 30 human rights and democracy organizations, including Amnesty International and Human Rights in China, have issued an open letter to President Xi. The group is calling for the immediate and unconditional release of “prisoners of conscience” and demanding reforms to end what they describe as systematic violations against activists, journalists, and religious leaders in China and Hong Kong.
