United States to import 300,000 tons of duty-free ground beef
President Donald Trump has announced a plan to temporarily allow the import of up to 300,000 metric tons of duty-free ground beef into the United States for a 90-day period. The measure aims to lower consumer prices for ground beef, which have risen significantly, amid a domestic cattle herd that has reached a 70-year low due to drought and high production costs.
Under the agreement, the imported beef is expected to be sold at 25 percent below current market prices. While the administration presents this as a way to support working families and allow the domestic herd to recover, the decision has faced intense criticism from the American ranching community and Republican lawmakers. The National Cattlemen’s Beef Association and various state-level associations expressed concerns that flooding the market with subsidized foreign beef could create volatility and undermine the recovery of the domestic livestock industry.
International producers, including those in Paraguay, are monitoring the situation to see if they can capitalize on the increased demand. Meanwhile, efforts to reopen cattle imports from Mexico via border crossings in Arizona are also underway to address the domestic shortage, though economists remain skeptical about the immediate impact on grocery prices.
