Trump Unveils Ratepayer Protection Pledge for AI Data Center Power

President Donald J. Trump gathered electric utilities and state leaders to sign a Ratepayer Protection Pledge that requires AI data‑center operators to cover the electricity needed for their facilities, aiming to shield residential customers from higher bills. The pledge was signed by seven AI hyperscalers – Amazon, Google, Meta, Microsoft, OpenAI, Oracle and xAI – and is promoted by the Environmental Protection Agency.

Utilities in the Southeast are already acting on the pledge. Georgia Power announced a Customer Protection Plan that includes a roughly $50‑per‑year residential rate reduction and a flexible data‑center deal with OpenAI. Duke Energy in North Carolina said a new Amazon Web Services data centre will create about 2,000 temporary jobs and 500 permanent positions, and it claims each gigawatt of data‑center capacity under a 15‑year contract can generate up to $1 billion in savings for broader customers.
