G7 summit in France pledges more air defence for Ukraine, harsher sanctions on Russia

At the G7 summit in Evian‑les‑Bains, France, leaders of the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, Japan, Canada, Italy and others issued a joint statement reaffirming "unwavering support" for Ukraine’s freedom, sovereignty and territorial integrity. The declaration committed to increase the delivery of air‑defence systems, additional interceptors and long‑range capabilities, and said licences could be extended to allow Ukraine to expand its own weapons production. It also pledged to boost energy‑resilience assistance ahead of winter and to intensify economic pressure on Russia by strengthening sanctions on its oil and gas sectors.

U.S. President Donald Trump, who said Russia must reach an agreement to end the war, held a "very good" bilateral meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and warned that sanctions on Russian oil shipments could be reinstated once maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz normalises after the U.S.–Iran deal. Other leaders, including India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi, met Zelenskyy on the sidelines, underscoring broad diplomatic engagement.

The G7 also welcomed the United States‑Iran agreement, describing it as a historic step to prevent Iran acquiring nuclear weapons and to ease regional tensions.
