Trump urges Senate to confirm FDA nominee Heidi Overton before midterms
President Donald Trump has called on the Senate to prioritize the confirmation of Dr. Heidi Overton as the next Commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) before the 2026 midterm elections. Trump expressed support for Overton, noting that Health and Human Services Secretary Bobby Kennedy also desires a swift confirmation process.
The FDA is a massive regulatory agency with a budget of approximately $7 billion, overseeing food, drugs, vaccines, medical devices, and tobacco. Following cuts implemented by the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), the agency's workforce has been reduced from 18,200 to roughly 16,000 employees.
The confirmation process may face political hurdles, as Senate hearings could force Republicans to address abortion rights. The Senate is not scheduled to return to Washington until September 14, with further recesses planned throughout October for election campaigning.
