Trump threatens 100% U.S. tariff on French wine over digital services tax

U.S. President Donald Trump warned that unless France repeals its 3 % digital services tax on American tech giants, he will impose a 100 % tariff on French wines and champagne. He told the New York Post, “I have no choice but to charge a 100 % tariff on all champagnes and all wines coming out of France.”

The threat was made hours before the G7 summit opened in Évian‑les‑Bains, where Trump and French President Emmanuel Macron are scheduled to meet. Macron said the two leaders would have “a respectful but firm discussion” and stressed that “tariffs do not benefit anyone, especially between G7 countries.”

France’s digital services tax, introduced in 2019, levies 3 % on the revenue of large digital platforms such as Google, Amazon, Meta and Apple. The United States considers the measure discriminatory. French wine exporters warned that the United States is the largest market for their products, accounting for about one‑fifth of annual exports—roughly $2 billion. A 100 % tariff would double prices in the U.S. market and could sharply reduce demand.

The dispute revives a pattern of trade pressure, with Trump previously threatening even higher duties on French alcohol. The outcome could affect trans‑Atlantic trade relations and the tone of the G7 discussions.
